CNNCTS Partner Lectures at the “other” SDSU—South Dakota State University

On October 4, 2024, San Diego State University geographer Dr. Janet Franklin was invited to give the 13th Virginia & J. Edward Holtry Distinguished Lecture in Geospatial Science at “the other SDSU” – South Dakota State University. Dr. Janet Franklin was invited to give the 13th Virginia & J. Edward Holtry Distinguished Lecture in Geospatial Science at ‘the other SDSU’ – South Dakota State University, located on Oceti Sakowin homelands. Dr. Franklin is a CNNCTS partner and Campanile Foundation Endowed Professor of Geography in the Center for Geospatial Sciences and Department of Geography at San Diego State University. She was invited by Xiaoyang Zhang, Distinguished Professor at the Department of Geography, and Geospatial Science Center of Excellence at South Dakota State University.


Speaking to over 200 attendees, Dr. Franklin gave a technical seminar entitled “Forecasting Global Change Impacts on Biodiversity” and a public lecture “Indigenous-led Eco-cultural stewardship for Climate Adaptation and Resilience.” In the public lecture she talked about her participation in the Collaborative of Native Nations for Climate Transformation and Stewardship (CNNCTS), a project co-led by San Diego State University that advances a model of Indigenous-led lands stewardship for climate adaptation and resilience by taking a community-based approach in southern California to support climate resilience, for cultural persistence and well-being of Tribal communities in southern California.
